In any case I was relieved that MMBT hadn't suffered the same fate as MM2/TRWĮDIT: I'd also like to add that part of my assessment was how the tracks on the 4K for both MM2 & MMBT really seem to prioritize the foley to the point that it tends to bury the music. I'm hoping a professional review here at Blu Ray.com or some of the other top sites such as Digital Bits and High Def Digest will be able to shed more light on this. The 3 tracks on the 4K disc just sounded similar enough to me that they all felt like they were basically the same (lossy compression not withstanding) which is why I ultimately felt that the 5.1 and 2.0 appear to be downmixes. I'll have to play back the parts you mentioned later today so thank you for providing examples. I was cycling through all 3 tracks as the movie was playing and also trying to play back the Blu Ray as well. But at any rate, you're right in that it's not a Road Warrior situation. Also, some of the differences in balance between music & SFX could be due to the lossy compression on the UHD. If nothing else, there does seem to be more stereoization in the surrounds on the Blu-ray's 5.1 than in the UHD's. Total speculation here, but I wonder if the 5.1 on the standard Blu-ray was a light remix from the original stems, while the 5.1 and 2.0 on the UHD are the actual original mix(es), possibly with some sweetening here and there. Jedidiah's flyovers at the beginning (particularly at 3:20 and 4:00) are definitely amped up and embellished in the Atmos, and when Pig Killer is impaled with the harpoon during the final chase (around 1:27:30), there's an extra "crunch" effect of it going through his leg that's not there in the other tracks. You're right about those places being a little different from the 5.1 on the Blu-ray, but there are some other spots where there are clearly some extra sound effects in the Atmos that aren't there in the UHD's 5.1 or 2.0. Had a listen to the spots you mentioned, and I'm not sure I agree. Here at least the original foley is largely still present and Warner didn't try to make it feel more modern like with MM2. Overall not happy that they decided to tinker with this film's track too and the 5.1 and 2.0 tracks do appear to be downmixes, but this is still nowhere near the sonic abortion that is the Mad Max 2 Atmos track and downmixes. EDIT: Just checked, the sound is the same on the Blu Ray. But on the 4K tracks it sounds like a light scuffle and I remember it sounding like more of a traditional movie punch. ![]() I'll have to check the Blu Ray again this evening. I could be wrong about this so don't quote me, but I think the sound of Max punching out Savannah Nix at crack in the Earth has been silenced. Same with some of the snapping noises of Max cutting the bands on Blaster's harness.Ĥ. ![]() In the Thunderdome battle the sounds of Blaster's grunts have been buried and/or removed. It sounds like a giant buzzing alarm in the middle of the track.ģ. On the 4K mixes, it's overpowering to the point that it gets annoying. On the Blu Ray's 5.1 it's heard as part of the ambiance of Bartertown. The buzzing of the Atmoic Cafe sign's flicking is now pushed to the front as well. The wind is now so overpowering that the music threatens to lost in the mixĢ. The music is subdued as Max approaches Bartertown for the first time. Several sounds have been pushed to the forefront of the mix and it doesn't match the sound of the 5.1 from the Blu Ray release.ġ. I finally sat down to watch the Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome 4K all the way through and while the film thankfully has not been subjected to the same revisionist foley mixing that Mad Max 2 has, it appears that the 2.0 track on the MMBT 4K is also a downmix of the new Atmos track like with MM2 (and I'd be willing to bet the 5.1 is as well).
